interpack China Expands its Global Footprint: SAVE FOOD China Gathers Momentum for November Launch

2026-06-30

Driven by the dual imperatives of food security and sustainability, the food supply chain packaging sector is undergoing a critical phase of strategic upgrading and industry evolution. As the cross-regional distribution of fresh produce, ready meals, and agricultural goods continues to expand, physical damage and spoilage during long-distance transit have emerged as major pain points for businesses striving to cut costs and minimize food loss. Serving as the final barrier between production and consumption, packaging is a crucial mechanism for reducing food waste throughout the distribution chain.

Against this backdrop, the SAVE FOOD Initiative was established. Founded by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Messe Düsseldorf, and interpack, the initiative aims to drive innovation in packaging and processing technologies. It fosters interdisciplinary dialogue to tangibly reduce food loss and waste through more efficient agricultural practices, optimized logistics, and advanced packaging solutions.

Global SAVE FOOD Innovations in Action: Leading International Packaging Solutions Highlight the Value of Waste Reduction

The latest achievements of this global initiative were showcased at the recently concluded interpack 2026, which saw the official announcement of the SAVE FOOD Awards 2026 winners. Separated into the SAVE FOOD Design Award and the Sustainability Design Award, this year's accolades spotlighted processing and packaging innovations that deliver measurable, proven impacts in real-world applications.

【SAVE FOOD Design Awards in 2026】

These awards distinguish solutions that reduce food waste and loss – from materials and technologies to all-round end-to-end concepts. The award-winning solutions address various points in the value chain--from the more effective protection of sensitive products through the extension of shelf life to the reduction of spoilage via the application of innovative packaging concepts and technologies.

  • Gold: Grupo Lantero (Spain)

ReKeepEat: A 100% mono-material, resealable PET solution designed to replace conventional multi-layer alternatives. Engineered for fully recycling, it extends product freshness while advancing circularity.

  • Silver: Greiner Packaging International GmbH (Austria)

Click-In Sealing Lid: This mono-material design integrates the sealing film and snap-on lid into a single unit, enhancing recyclability, conserving materials, and lowering carbon dioxide emissions.

  • Bronze: Innoscentia AB (Schwerden)

Real-Time Spoilage Detection Sensor: This sensor detects a loss of freshness via visible color changes, identifying spoilage before food is unnecessarily discarded, thereby curbing waste across the entire supply chain.

【SAVE FOOD Sustainability Design Awards in 2026】

The Sustainability Design Award recognizes products, machines, systems and services that measurably shrink environmental footprints and carbon emissions, for example, through material efficiency, recyclability, ESG strategies, regulatory compliance.

  • Gold: ALFA Machine Kourtoglou (Greece)

A sustainable form-fill-seal packaging technology, based on a pure polypropylene monomaterial, ensuring cups, lids, and in-mold labels are 100% recyclable.

  • Silver: IRPLAST/TOPPAN Packaging (Italy/Czech Republic)

A solvent-free, fully recyclable mono-PP retort pouch. Capable of withstanding high temperatures for safe food sterilization, it extends shelf life while effectively mitigating waste.

  • Bronze: AeroFlexx Packaging (USA)

A lightweight, all-in-one packaging solution for liquid foods (such as sauces and condiments). Fusing the benefits of flexible and rigid packaging, this single-material system features a built-in dispensing valve, drastically reducing plastic usage and optimizing logistics.

Sixth Edition Approaching: The China Chapter Focuses on Advanced Packaging Solutions to Curb Food Loss

SAVE FOOD CHINA, the regional implementation of this global initiative, debuted in 2017 at swop (Shanghai World of Packaging). As the exhibition officially rebrands to interpack China, this highly significant event will mark its sixth edition. On the afternoon of November 16, 2026, the Save Food (China) Forum, alongside the Awarding Ceremony for SAVE FOOD Design Award & Sustainability Design Award China, will take center stage at the exhibition. Government officials, research institutions, food processors, and supply chain representatives will convene to discuss measurable, proven innovations in processing and packaging. Key topics will include fresh food preservation packaging, supply chain loss reduction, and lightweight circular packaging, ultimately driving industry-wide transformations that benefit businesses, society, and the global food system.

Notably, interpack China will partner for the first time with the Australasian Institute of Packaging (AIP)—a proud member and active promoter of the global SAVE FOOD Initiative—to jointly advance food reduction and the sustainable packaging industry in the Asia-Pacific region. As the leading authority on packaging education and training in Australia, New Zealand & South East Asia, AIP has long been committed to advancing sustainable practices in the packaging industry and has led the global SAVE FOOD Packaging design criteria, research and guidelines development within End Food Waste Australia. This strategic partnership will bring more cutting-edge international design perspectives and successful case studies to interpack China 2026, fostering the exchange of best practices between China and the Australasian region. interpack China welcomes exhibitors form the Australasian region to join us in 2026 in the international pavilion.
